I was right last week. Lego Masters has hit its stride, and has become the show I was hoping for!
What is Lego Masters?
Lego Masters is your typical reality TV show with a twist. Instead of cooking up creative food dishes, contestants build amazing creations with Lego bricks! Lego Masters pits 10 teams of 2 against each other in what appear to be weekly themed challenges.
The Fourth Build – Movie Genres
This week’s competition theme was “Movie Genres”. Each team picked a brick built tub of popcorn containing their movie genre to build. Teams only had 6 hours to build this week! The movie genres were:
- Thriller
- Western
- Fantasy
- Romance
- Comedy
- Kids
- Monster
- Mystery
6 hours is NOT a lot of time to create something awesome. And it was showing in the builds. They just weren’t up to par. They were smaller in scale. They were more fragile looking, with one creation disintegrating in a contestants hand when they were simply holding it.
Enter “The Plot Twist!”
Special guests, Lego Movie directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were introduced. Phil and Christopher gave each team an additional genre and had 6 more hours to create their epic mashup! I’ll get into mashups when I talk about the teams below.
Again, the emphasis was on story. The build must tell a clear, concise story and not rely of a long narrative explanation. As I’ve stated before, I love this focus, and it’s something I want to explore going forward.
My Thoughts
Overall, a great week. The challenge was a great idea, and the models were spectacular for the most part.! This week, it was Amy’s turn to be bad cop, and following the trend last week there was less Will. I don’t really remember any bad puns, or running jokes, or anything like that. I was bummed there was no special guest this week.
The Builds – Spoilers Ahead
Team: The Bearded Builders
Thoughts: The Bearded Builders got the Monster genre. They built an awesome shark-man monster terrorizing a city. Tragedy almost struck when Boone was just holding his create, and it broke apart in his hands, but he was able to recover. They were then given Romance, which was perfect. Their solution was elegantly simple; create a shark-woman calling to her mate with her shark song. It was wonderful.
And it landed them in the top two. They went on to win the week!
Team: East Coast Bricksters
Mel & Jermaine
Thoughts: The guys originally drew Fantasy and were then given Kids. I ain’t gonna lie. I think they struggled this week. Their Fantasy build was some sort of city scape getting terrorized by a monster. It wasn’t Fantasy. My memory isn’t clear, because it just wasn’t that memorable. And in fairness, they didn’t get a lot of airtime. The addition of Kids made them add a giant mutated baby to the mix, MUCH to the chagrin of the Newlyweds…
Team: The Unicorns
Thoughts: The girls got Mystery this week and built a kind of Scooby Do graveyard thing. Then they were given Western, and it kind of fell apart. I really didn’t understand what they were going for, and the judges agreed. It was like two separate builds just sitting next to each other. This landed them in the bottom two.
Team: Father & Son BFFS
Mannie & Nestor
Thoughts: The father son duo got Western. And did an amazing job. They built an amazing saloon, a bunch of cowboys, etc. Then they were given Fantasy. I thought this was an easy one! Turn the horses into unicorns or centaurs. Go steampunk like Will Smith’s Wild Wild West. Easy Peasy. Nope. At first they took fantasy literally and built a set of partially related vignettes of the main character fantasizing about himself in various scenarios. After their mistake was pointed out to them, they quickly threw together some spaceships that were supposed to be stealing something. It wasn’t well done, didn’t make sense, and landed them in the bottom two. They were then eliminated.
Team: Brothers Who Brick
Thoughts: Eliminated second in Episode 3.
Team: The Eccentrics
Thoughts: This week their theme was Thriller. And they went totally dark sided. Even my daughter thought it was a bit much. Their story was something like a bunch of captured women held against their will at some camp. Then they were given comedy, and they did lighten the mood significantly. They turned into into a bunch of moms escaping from the camp their kids took over. The only criticism they received was their non-brick built water which was a bunch of little blue pieces piled up. Personally, I don’t mind this method, and have used it myself.
These guys have come a LONG way. Great job!
Team: Married Thespians
Thoughts: The Thespians had to build a Kids movie and started with fairies in a meadow. They were then given mystery and their build turned into fairy sisters; one good and one evil. The evil fairy stole the key to the good fairy’s power, and her minions were our searching for it. It was a cute build.
Team: The Newlyweds
Tyler & Amy
Thoughts: Comedy was their first genre. Their build included Super Baby guarding a refrigerator full of milk from a gang of thieving cats. When given the Monster genre, that added the terrifying Meowster; a huge cat monster bursting through the floor. It was an amazing build and landed them in the top two. Should it have won the week? I’m not sure. The shark love was super obvious in the Bearded Builders build, so I think that gave them the edge.
These guys are my odds on favorites to win. By far.
Team: The Higher the Hair the Closer to God
Jessie & Kara
Thoughts: Eliminated first in Episode 2.
Team: Clark Kent & Superman
Thoughts: The team I thought would win it all is struggling. Badly. They are far and away the best builders, but it’s like they don’t understand the rules. They don’t understand you need to follow the challenge of the week. For Romance, they built an incredible castle and an animated dragon that was stunning. And there was a princess. And we were supposed to believe they were in love. I didn’t see it, and neither did the judges. To make it worse, they got Thriller for their second genre. So they added an evil cave and some skeleton warriors. And now the princess was falling to her death. It didn’t work. At all. The judges basic told them this, and basically told them they needed to use their golden brick.
I’m glad they did. It would be a shame if they got eliminated over something stupid.
Final Thoughts
The best builders are starting to distance themselves from the pack. The show is way better now than it was in the first episode. I can’t wait to see who wins the golden brick next!
